Listened to this episode on the way home from school today. I don’t think I told you guys but I’m Portuguese. When Jon mentioned that Javier is Portuguese it sounded extremely weird to me. That name is not Portuguese in the slightest. Additionally I agree with Jen’s statement as to it being weird that they read his Miranda rights in Spanish. One possibility could be that none of the officers spoke Portuguese? It is very easy for a Portuguese speaker to understand Spanish. I actually kept thinking the same thing about Javier’s name – it definitely sounds Spanish – I wonder if some media sources got that part incorrect? Anything is possible there. But yeah, the fact that the whole wall thing is being brought up with this when the victim’s family was Mexican is just such a shame and if Javier is Portugese then it’ll bring in not just border walls but immigration changes in general. Jon,  The U.S. will be able to sentence Javier without Portugal interfering. The only reason the other man got away is because before the cops were able to ban him from leaving the U.S., he flew to Portugal. My opinion was that we could have told the cops in the U.S. where exactly he’s staying in Portugal but my dad responded with that statement on how Portugal will not send him over for his sentence because we still have states allowing the death penalty. Ahh makes a little more sense now. I guess the dual citizenship makes a little more sense about his name, too. Super helpful in helping us understand these cases! Really fascinating the connections there – really awesome to hear from you about these cases!

I was on my way to school and realized I needed gas. So I decided to make a detour and stop at the closest Costco gas station (cheaper gas). Turns out the closest was in New Rochelle and me, not being able to follow simple GPS directions ended up driving around suburban New Rochelle. Needless to say, it’s a rich area as I had originally assumed. Beautiful houses, however Nicole may be right by saying there are sketchy neighborhoods.
